Acceptance of gifts policy
Donors may make gifts to the Foundation by naming the Foundation as the recipient or as the beneficiary.
The Foundation may decline a gift if the Foundation Board determines that the gift is not in the Foundation's best interests. Gifts shall vest in the Foundation upon receipt, unless the Foundation Board subsequently declines such gift, provided, however, that any gift subject to a restriction shall not vest until accepted by the Board.
FAQ
Why should I donate to the Dearborn Library Foundation?
The Dearborn Library Foundation raises private funds to augment public monies, enabling the Library to fulfill its mission with the best resources and most innovative services and programming possible. The Foundation will provide the Library with flexible funding allowing forward movement with a visionary approach to Library services, embodying community ideas, such as literacy and lifelong learning. Tax-supported libraries must look to the private sector to assist them in meeting the changing needs of the constituency they serve.
Who is involved in directing the Dearborn Library Foundation?
The Library Foundation is managed and directed by a group of private citizens representing business as well as cultural and civic leadership in the community. Foundation Board members are committed to the support and development of the Library’s projects and programs.
Are the Library Commission and Library Administration involved?
Yes. The Library Director and a representative from the Library Commission sit as permanent ex-officio board members.
Don’t my tax dollars already support the Library?
Yes, the Dearborn Public Library receives funding from the City of Dearborn property tax revenue. However, the Library is challenged to accomplish its mission while operating within a budget that may not provide funds for expanding programs and services or enhancing facilities. Foundation funds will bridge the gap between the public support the Library already receives and the real cost of bringing innovation and enhancements to the Library.
Can’t I give money directly to the Library?
While the Library welcomes monetary gifts, those gifts are subject to the budgetary process which may reduce the Library’s ability to flexibly spend those funds or to respond quickly to special opportunities.
What about the Friends of the Library Dearborn (FOLD)?
Since the 1980’s, the Friends, through their monthly book sale, support the Library’s annual, short-term needs. The Foundation focuses on the long-term financial health and growth of the Library. Ultimately, the Friends and the Foundation complement one another perfectly in meeting both the current and long-term financial needs of the Library.
Won’t the City simply decrease Library funding if the Foundation receives funds?
Donors put their energy behind their dollars, which increases the visibility of the Library in the community. Foundation research has shown that financial support from all sources increases in communities where there is a strong public/private alliance.
What types of donations will the Dearborn Library Foundation accept?
